Volleyball as an intercollegiate sport is set to begin at Wenatchee Valley College in Fall 2007.

"This will be a tremendous addition to our athletic program," said Jessica Schutt, WVC Athletic Director. "We are the only college in the Eastern Region without volleyball at this time, and we're eager to build on the great high school and club programs that already exist in our community."

In fact, she said, it's the support from the community along with the students and college administration that is making a volleyball team at WVC a reality.

"The local club volleyball association has expressed high interest in helping us get our program up and running the first year," she said. "And the WVC Athletic Booster Club has made a commitment to raise money for the eight athletic scholarships that are allowed by the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC)."

The Associated Students of WVC Student Senate voted to contribute funds to the program, and the athletic department will seek outside funding to purchase uniforms for the first year.

The program received approval from the NWAACC on Wednesday, Jan. 31. The college’s next steps are to hire a coach and recruit players. The competitive volleyball season will start next fall.
